Ah, the ritual of the haircut. Specifically, the ritual of having to banter uselessly with the person giving you the haircut.
What are your plans for the day? they'll ask. What do you do? Do you have family in town? What are you doing for the holidays?
Does the person really care? Somehow I doubt it. But there's this charade the stylist has to go through, and somehow you are expected to participate, thus perpetuating the belief that the charade is necessary.

what is this "haircut" thing of which you speak? ;-P
sounds like an opportunity to hit on the cute hair stylist babe, if indeed it's a "she" and "cute". maybe I should re-think my stance on haircuts...
you should try making up some story about how you're an astronaut or something.
the mole
Is this not irony?
I don't have a cute hair stylist babe, probably because I don't have much hair, styling it seems something of a gwot, and Roy is neither she nor cute.
Yes, it is somewhat ritualistic and I'm positive I'm not very good at it - travel & gardening seem to be about it. In my experience, women have this sewn up, but I'm guessing that eavesdropping is frowned on.
Hit on the stylist once. She said she couldn't go to the Queen concert with me because her fiance wouldn't approve. She married him (they were both named Miller, saves on monograms) and quit.
I have the ability to make my hair stylist pregnant. It has happened three times so far. They get pregnant and then they quit. I am thinking of letting my hair grow and opening a fertility clinic.
I see no reason why you shouldn't lie to someone cutting your hair. Make the day better for you and that person.
My stylist is at least 10 years older than me and not incredibly attractive, so I don't flirt with her.
However, since I see her once every two months, I would feel bad lying to her. I have no problem lying to people I'll only ever see once, but if I lied, I'd have to remember that each time I went.
Thanks for reminding me, I need to schedule a haircut soon.
It has scrolled off the front page of your blog, but I just wanted to say that I saw Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang this weekend. Two words: fan tastic! I don't have a top 100 list, but it is definitely a 4 star movie for me.
