Seriously, I think they could just tell the censors that "Boner" was meant in the blunder or mistake meaning of the word. Context is important for TV censorship (e.g., when you can say "cock"). And I don't remember them ever insinuating that his name had the penis connotation.
When I was a kid we got Lost In Space re-runs on a Sunday afternoon. I'll never forget the one with a character called Commander Bollix. More a case of "we had no idea" than "we're getting away with it".

It was always rumoured that there was a character on Captain Pugwash called Seaman Stains, but I think that was an urban legend. Shame though.
