Wish I was still in NYC because the delectable Morena Baccarin was supposedly at last night's screening! Yum.

A negative review at Ain't It Cool:
http://www.aintitcool.com/tb_display.cgi?id=20570#924912 (sorry no hyperlink) but the reviewer reveals enough of his tastes that I'm hopeful for a better reaction from most "mainstream" viewers.

David: did you enjoy it? Were you a fan of the TV show?

Wow, that review has a lot of spoilers.

Anyway, I attempted to watch Firefly when it was originally on the air and just couldn't get into it. I thought it was average at best.

About a month ago, I borrowed the DVD from a friend and watched them in their intended order. This time, I was able to really appreciate the show and enjoyed it. I would say it was a great television show.

The movie had a difficult line to cross, having to introduce people who haven't seen the show to the characters and their backstories and still tell a new, interesting story. I felt it succeeded in this admirably. No, we don't get the same sense of who the characters are from the 13 episodes of the show, but at least four of the characters (Mal, Jayne, Simon, River, and to a lesser extent Zoe) are pretty well fleshed out.

I had some problems with the movie, both as a general movie viewer (I feel there's a decent plothole toward the end) and as a fan (some of the same criticisms as the ain't it cool review), but while it wasn't great like the series, it was still really good.

I saw it with five other people - two of whom, like me, loved the show, one of whom liked the show, and the other two, who had never seen the show. Everyone I was with enjoyed the movie.

Cool. I fall into the camp that was hungry for resulotion of TV show plot threads, but obviously I'd like it to be popular and successful too.
